Our Ingredients

Ingredient Purpose Origin
Sodium palmate
(Palm oil)
A gentle skin cleanser. Used as a hardener for vegetable oil soaps. From outer fibrous pulp of the fruit of the oil palm, Elaeis guineensis. Sourced from members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil.
Sodium cocoate
(Coconut oil)
Excellent cleanser that yields a nice, rich lather. Contains anti-oxidants that help to heal skin and provide protection against free radicals. From kernels of the seeds of coconut, Cocos nucifera. Coconut oil is a highly sustainable resource.
Water Used for dissolving lye (sodium hydroxide) before adding to oils in saponification process. A natural by-product of the soap making process. The saponification of oils yields about 30% water.
(Vegetable) Glycerine A natural humectant, long used as a skin beautifier, pulls water from the air and binds it to the skin, and is also an emollient. A natural by-product of the soap making process. Many commercial soaps remove the natural glycerine by a chemical separation process and sell it for use in other products.
Polyglycerides derived from sunflower oil A great skin emollient that soothes and softens skin. From sunflower oil.
Butyrospermum parkii (Shea) butter Helps skin retain moisture and elasticity. Used to treat a variety of skin conditions. A natural fat extracted from the nuts of the Magnifolia tree in Africa.
Sodium citrate
(Citric acid)
Has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties and acts as a stabilizer and natural preservative. From citric acid.
Mauritia flexuosa fruit oil Rich in essential fatty acids and emollients that keep skin smooth and supple. From the fruit of the Buriti tree in the Amazon jungles.

FAQs

Are your coconut oil and palm oil from sustainable sources?

Coconut oil is a highly sustainable resource and does not hold the environmental threat that palm oil poses. The huge demand for palm oil for biodiesel production is driving the massive clear-cutting of rainforests in Malaysia and Indonesia to set up palm oil plantations. And while our formula does include a small amount of palm oil, it is sourced from members of the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil.

Is there caustic lye (sodium hydroxide) in your soap?

Lye (sodium hydroxide) is used in the saponification process and there is absolutely no trace of it left in the finished product.

Does it really have no scent?

There is no added fragrance and no masking agent added to hide any scent. Most people tell us they don’t smell a thing.

Does it come in other scents?

No—but we do also make TrueBody Soap, which is a basic, everyday bar of soap.

Do you make it yourself (home/hand made)?

We wanted to make this in large enough quantities to reach many people so it’s made at Twincraft, a world-class contract manufacturer in Winooski, Vermont. Using mass production techniques also helps us keep costs down.
